The Hahei Explorer has the privilege of operating in Te-Whanganui-A-Hei, or “The Great Bay of Hei”. This is a truly magical place, with a rich history of people and place. Our vision is to provide an excellent experience whilst protecting, preserving and enhancing the area for future generations.
Our Hītori (History)
The Hahei Explorer is the original Cathedral Cove boat tour in The Coromandel. Established in 1992, our tours have been showing visitors the spectacular volcanic coastline for over 30 years.
Our 1 hour scenic cruises are a Coromandel must do and have been voted the #1 water based activity in New Zealand (AA Travel).
Our extensive local knowledge has guided the development and design of 3 purpose built vessels. Customised for operating off Hahei beach and getting you up close and personal with little known parts of the coastline and abundant marine life. The Hahei Explorer is a family run and locally owned business.
Our team shares a collective passion for the Te Whanganui-a-hei (Mercury Bay) and we pride ourselves on providing a premiere experience.
Our Sustainability
The Hahei Explorer is committed to providing an excellent experience whilst restoring, protecting and enhancing the Te Whanganui-A-Hei area for future generations.
Te Whanganui-A-Hei (Mercury Bay) is a taonga (treasure), we support the Tiaki promise to care for and protect this area and the whole of Aotearoa, people and place. Fostering a sustainable relationship between our business and ecosystem is of the utmost importance to us. We strive to operate in a way that has as minimal impact on our environment as possible and are constantly reviewing and improving our practices working towards our Carbon Zero goal.
Tha Hahei Explorer is always looking for ways to honor and respect cultural traditions, customs and values. Values of sustainability align very closely with many of the traditional Māori values. Whanaungatanga, Kaitiakitanga, and Manaakitanga are key concepts of Te Ao Māori that that guide our culture and the way we operate.

The Hahei Explorer Whānau are the heart of our organisation. Our team of legends share our passion for the ocean, Te Whanganui-a-hei, and our enthusiasm for sharing it with the world.
The Hahei Explorer is living wage certified and we pride ourselves on providing an excellent work environment, in what may be one of the most beautiful places in the world. Our captains are highly trained professionals and hold relevant commercial marine qualifications.
They all bring diverse skill sets from previous qualifications, including but not limited to; marine science, environmental studies and outdoor education. We love that their different personalities and passions make every trip unique.
